Castillo de Belmonte, Cuenca

Calle Eugenia de Montijo, Belmonte, Castilla-La Mancha

Description

The Castle of Belmonte was built in the second half of the 15th century by order of the first Marquis de Villena. It is located on a hill just outside of the village of Belmonte in the southwest of Cuenca Province. It was restored in the mid-19th century, keeping the defensive exterior look but updating the interior for residential purposes. It was restored again more recently in 2010 and can now be visited.

Access & Transport

Belmonte is about 100km southwest of Cuenca, a straightforward 75mins drive on the N-420. From Madrid, it is a 1h45 / 150km journey on the A3 (until Saelices) followed by the CM310/CM-3011. The castle is less than 1km to the west of the centre of the village Wheelchair users can only access the ground floor and first floor (not the second)

Instructions & Recommendations

Take note of the split hours with lunch break.

Meta review

The castle isn't very well now overseas but a little more in Spain, having appeared in several movies. Visitors have very positive comments about the extent of the renovation and how beautiful the ceilings are, stating that it is worth the entrance fees. The main drawback is the location with no other tourist highlights in the vicinity.

Environmental & Social

Environmentally neutral. Preserves the region's architectural and historical heritage

Conclusion

Were it surrounded by more tourist sights or monuments we would be less reserved in recommending a visit to this castle. If you enjoy road-trips or planning to visit the region of Cuenca anyways then it is an excellent additional stop to add to your itinerary. For those who make it there, do check out the schedule ahead of time, there are some seasonal activities and shows that may make a visit a little bit more special.

Key positive

Castle is in incredibly good condition inside and outside

Key negative

Requires some time investment to get there and not much else or touristic interest around

Suitability

Suitable for all ages. Partially accessible for visitors with reduced mobility with lift to first floor but not to the second
