Cuenca Cathedral

Plaza Mayor, Cuenca, Castilla-La Mancha

Description

Cuenca Cathedral was built between 1196 and 1257 in the city of Cuenca, in the namesake province in Castile-La Mancha, only a few years after the city was reconquered from the Moors in 1177. It was one of the earliest examples of the Gothic architecture in the Iberian Peninsula (that mostly used Romanesque style at the time) and notable features include the sexpartite rib vaulting, the double ambulatory, the altar of Saint Julian with its stained-glass windows, and the 120m length of the building. The price indicated in the practical information section is for access to the Cathedral, the Treasure Museum, San Pedro and Tower and the Triforium. There are cheaper tickets options for the Cathedral or Cathedral + Triforium only.

Access & Transport

The city of Cuenca is 170km (2h drive) east of Madrid on the A-3 / A-40. It is 3h by regional train from Madrid's Atocha station. The Cathedral is located on the Plaza Mayor. Note that the Treasure Museum not accessible to visitors with reduced mobility

Instructions & Recommendations

We highly recommend taking the time to visit the rest of the city, in particular the "hanging" houses area and the various lookouts.

Meta review

The Cathedral is a regional highlight and online reviews are overwhelmingly positive; most people enjoy the stunning side chapels, the exterior look and the views from the outside walkway (Triforium). The audio-guide also get credit for its informative but to the point content. The modern stained-glass windows are probably the one feature that attracts conflicting feedback.

Environmental & Social

Environmentally neutral. The entrance fee helps preserve this historic building, part of the city's cultural heritage. Tourism also generates some economic influx to the town

Conclusion

Cuenca Cathedral is truly worth a visit, even for those not normally too keen on churches (and in a country that has a lot of highly interesting ones). It combines a long history with many peculiar architectural features, impressive stonework and art with a very unique setting (the hanging houses and San Pablo bridge are right behind it)
