La Ciudad Encantada (Cuenca)

CM-2104, Cuenca, Castilla-La Mancha

Description

La Ciudad Encantada is a geological site consisting of karst formations with very distinctive shapes located in the Serranía de Cuenca natural park, northeast of the city of Cuenca. The rock formations are made of limestone and dolomite and were created through erosion of the original limestone plateau during the Cretaceous period, about 90mn years ago. Visitors follow a 3km one-way trail The following link includes details about other areas of interest in the natural park: https://www.ciudadencantada.es/es/que_visitar

Access & Transport

The site is 25km northeast of Cuenca on the CM-2104/CM-2105 From Madrid, it is a 2h15' / 200km journey via Cuenca.

Instructions & Recommendations

Make sure to wear proper footwear and bring some water with you The exact timing changes throughout the year to match sunset time, the exact closing times can be found here: https://www.ciudadencantada.es/es/horarios This activity can easily be combined with a visit of the city of Cuenca and its cathedral

Meta review

The site gets mostly Spanish tourists and, based on reviews, is generally not busy. Visitors confirm that the trail is well marked and suitable for both younger children and elder persons (but not wheelchair users). Most of the formations are given animal nicknames and taking a guide helps getting more out of the excursion.

Environmental & Social

Green activity. Socially neutral.

Conclusion

La Ciudad Encantada is an attractive touristic sight and the opportunity for a gentle hike, but it can't escape the drawback of its rather remote location. We would particularly recommend a visit to families and those who happen to have scheduled an itinerary in the region, but we do not believe it warrants more than a 75 mins dedicated drive.
