Description
Bergerac is a sub-prefecture of the Dordogne department in southwestern France. It is popular with tourists and has a significant british "expat" population, attracted by the quality of life of the Perigord region The town's origins go back to prehistoric settlements and some of the existing houses date from the 14th century. The key highlights include the Notre Dame church, the statues of Cyrano de Bergerac, the Protestant Temple, the old quarter, and the Dordogne river.
Access & Transport
Bergerac is served by the Bergerac-Roumanière airport (code EGC) which has a few domestic flights and some European routes (mostly to the UK). By train, it is a 75mins ride from Bordeaux and the station is in the centre of town. The 90km car drive from Bordeaux takes about 90mins on the D936. Périgueux is 45km to the northeast and Sarlat 70km to the east.
Instructions & Recommendations
Bergerac is a great base to explore the region and sights such as the Monbazillac castle or the Cadouin Cloister.
Environmental & Social
The main activities in the city have a low carbon footprint. Tourism is a welcome injection of activity and revenues in the local economy
Conclusion
Bergerac is slowly gaining in popularity but remains an under-appreciated destination. There isn't that many attractions to justify more than 1 or 1.5 days sightseeing, but it is the perfect base to explore the western side of the Perigord.
