Cloister of Cadouin Abbey

Place de l'Abbaye, Le Buisson-de-Cadouin, Nouvelle-Aquitaine

Description

The Cloister of Cadouin is part of Cadouin Abbey, which was founded in 1115 and joined the Cistercian Order 4 years later. It is located in the south of the Perigord region, in southwestern France, on one of the pilgrimage routes to Santiago de Compostela. The church was designed in the Roman style and the cloister was decorated in Gothic Flamboyant during the 15th century. The attraction here are the various stone sculptures.

Access & Transport

The village of Cadouin is 35km east of Bergerac, a 40mins drive on the D660 until Couze-et-Saint-Front and then on the D703/D29 to Cales, and finally the D28. Bergerac is also the closest airport with a few European flights.

Instructions & Recommendations

We suggest exploring the small village of Cadouin together with the cloister. The bastide of Monpazier, 20km to the south, also makes a good complement.

Meta review

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the cloister is popular with visitors mostly in the summer months. Reviewers are very complimentary of the carvings and the excellent restoration work. There are regular comments that it is worth upgrading to an audio-guide and even the guided tour if possible. The only negative comments relate to price in comparison of the small size of the cloister (only the patio area is open to visit but entrance to the church is free).

Environmental & Social

Environmentally neutral Helps preserve the region's architectural and cultural heritages and brings some economic influx to the village

Conclusion

The Cloister of the Cadouin Abbey is picture perfect and certainly worth a stop. However, competition between old villages, churches and other historical monuments is high in this region so we do not think it warrants a long-range journey by itself. If you are in the broader area though, it should be on your shortlist.
