Commarque Castle - by Management
Description
The Château de Commarque is a castle located in the village of Les Eyzies-de-Tayac-Sireuil, in the Dordogne department of southwestern France. It was founded in the 12th century on a rocky outcrop in the Vezere Valley, above the La Beune river, at the crossroads of the Périgueux to Cahors and Bergerac to Brive roads. Some significant renovation has been done but only well-preserved ruins remain.
Access & Transport
Located 17km northwest of Sarlat (25mins drive), 60km southeast of Périgueux (65mins drive) and 60km east of Bergerac (1h15mins drive) There is free parking 500m from the entrance.
Instructions & Recommendations
It is recommended to wear closed shoes for comfort and safety rasons This activity can be combined with a visit of Lascaux IV (23km to the north), of La Roque Saint Christophe (16km to the northwest), and/or Sarlat (17km to the southeast).
Environmental & Social
Environmentally neutral. Helps preserve the region's architectural and cultural heritages
Conclusion
The Château de Commarque is visually arresting but, in our opinion, it lacks historical relevance and more "cultural substance". This is being partly addressed through ongoing renovations but for the time being we think there are better alternatives in Dordogne - if you have extra days and looking for a family-friendly activity then, in that case, it is a good option.
