Gabarres de Beynac, river cruise

355 ROUTE DES GABARRIERS, Beynac-et-Cazenac, Nouvelle-Aquitaine

Description

The Gabarres de Beynac is an operator proposing 50mins cruises on the Dordogne leaving from the village of Beynac-et-Cazenac in the Dordogne department of southwestern France. "Gabarre" is the local name of the flat-bottom boat that look a little like barges. The circuit enables visitors to view Beynac with its limestone cliff, the Fayrac castle, glimpse the site of the Marqueyssac gardens, and the Castelnaud castle.

Access & Transport

Boarding is next the post office. The village of Beynac is located 12km southwest of Sarlat (15mins drive) along the D57. Sarlat is on the train line from Bordeaux (2h20mins) and Bergerac (1h05mins). Those are also the closest airports. By car, Bordeaux is about 195km away (2h15mins) and Bergerac 62km (1h05mins).

Instructions & Recommendations

This activity can be combined with the visit of the Beynac castle (same village) or Castelnaud-la-Chapelle Castle. The Marqueyssac Gardens (3km away) are also extremely popular.

Meta review

Most customers enjoy their cruise and highlight the great views and the quality of the guide's explanations - including in English. There are however some recurring comments from visitors that complain that no English commentary was provided when it was advertised and that their circuit seemed oddly short and did not allow them to properly enjoy all the sights as promised.

Environmental & Social

No info on fuel used by the boats. Promotes a small operation with local guides and some economic benefits from tourism for the local villages

Conclusion

A river trip with the Gabarres de Beynac is a relaxing activity that gives passengers time to enjoy the beauty of the local area. It is a nice way to mix it up but, if you are a little pressed for time or find the cruise pricey, you can get quite similar views from various vantage points along the road on either side of the Dordogne - you will however be missing out on the interesting commentaries from the local guides.

Relaxing activity with beautiful scenery

Other attractions nearby to make it a full day in the area

Key negative

Fairly short tour

English commentary may not be consistently available

Suitability

Suitable for all ages. Accessible for visitors with reduced mobility but unclear if wheelchair users need to transfer to a seat - best to contact the management and check with them directly.
