Gouffre de Proumeyssac

Route de Proumeyssac, Audrix, Nouvelle-Aquitaine

Description

The Gouffre de Proumeyssac is a natural cavity located in the "Perigord Noir" region of Dordogne, in southwestern France. It was discovered in 1907 and mainly consists of a large 42m deep chamber as well as several galleries. It is nicknamed the "cathédrale de cristal" and visitors can see stalactites, stalagmites, monoliths, and a petrifying spring (lime-rich water that deposit layers of tufa over time). Thís review and practical information are for the "Classic" visit by foot but there is the option to use a small gondola (higher ticket price applies).

Access & Transport

Located between Bergerac (45km to the west) and Sarlat (28km to the east) The train station of Le Buisson (on the Bordeaux to Sarlat line) is only 10km away

Instructions & Recommendations

We advise visitors to bring a second layer if visiting during the summer as the temperature inside is 14°C

Meta review

The attraction is getting mixed but not contradictory reviews. Visitors are awed by the chasm and generally enjoy the light show but there are consistent comments about the visit being too short and that guides for the English tours barely provide any information. The other main issue pointed out is the frustration about not being able to use cameras.

Environmental & Social

Green activity for those who opt to cycle to produce their share of electricity! The operator has a comprehensive environmental policy that extends to its suppliers and has a "NF environnement" certification. From a social perspective, the site helps preserve the region's natural heritage and educate visitors about their environment

Conclusion

The chasm of Proumeyssac is visually spectacular but is a bit of a one trick pony. Those who have not seen any or many such natural features before will be delighted but those who have seen others (and they are quite few in the southwest of France in Dordogne, the Lot, or Aveyron) might want to think twice, especially considering the visit doesn't come cheap.

Key positive

Very impressive main chamber

Key negative

Expensive for such a short visit

Suitability

Suitable for all ages. Access to the main chamber is through a gently sloping path so visitors with reduced mobility can get a good view of the cave but will not be able to access the lower area.
