La Roque Saint-Christophe

D66, Peyzac-le-Moustier, Nouvelle-Aquitaine

Description

La Roque Saint-Christophe is a 60-80m high and 1km long limestone cliff located in the village of Peyzac-le-Moustier (next to Eyzies) in Dordogne in southwestern France. Natural cavities have been used by cave-dwellers since prehistoric times until the Renaissance period (it was used as a hiding place for Huguenots during the religious wars). The visit also includes a virtual reality movie seeking to illustrate the evolution of the cliff and its usage over time.

Access & Transport

Located 27km northwest of Sarlat (35mins drive) and 45km southeast of Périgueux (50mins drive) There is free onsite parking

Instructions & Recommendations

This activity can be combined with a visit of Lascaux IV (15km to the northeast) and/or Commarque Castle (16km to the southeast)

Meta review

The site is not well-known but gets excellent reviews. Visitors enjoy the views of and from the cliff side and learning about life and settlements in this sheltered area that evolved over the course of millennia. The quality of the audio and video materials is also highlighted. There are however some visitors (adults mostly, not children) who feel their interest quickly waning after 30-40mins and accordingly thought the attraction a little pricey.

Environmental & Social

Environmentally neutral. The site helps preserve the region's cultural heritage and educate visitors.

Conclusion

The Roque Saint Christophe is both a natural feature and an educational attraction covering an interesting, if limited, topic. The inclusion of tools and machinery is visually helpful and partially compensate for the emptiness of most of the site. We would particularly recommend a visit to families and those who happen to already be in the area, noting that it would attract more people and recommendations if pricing were a little lower.
