Lascaux IV

Avenue de Lascaux, Montignac, Nouvelle-Aquitaine

Description

Lascaux IV is the newest reproduction of the famous painted Lascaux Caves that were discovered in 1940 near the village of Montignac in Dordogne. The network comprised over 600 parietal wall paintings (parietal refers to rock art of cave art) and has been closed to the public to avoid deterioration since 1963. Lascaux IV opened in 2016 and forms part of the International Centre for Parietal Art. It has the most accurate replica and leverages digital technology; it was designed by Snøhetta and built inside the hill overlooking Montignac. The paintings represent animals, human figures and abstract signs. The visit is split between a 45-60mins guided tour in a small group (available in several European languages) through the cave replica and then free roaming in the museum.

Access & Transport

The museum is 25km north of Sarlat (30mins drive on the D704) and 50km east of Périgueux (45mins drive).

Instructions & Recommendations

This activity can be combined with a visit of the village of Montignac and the cliffside dwellings of La Roque St Christophe (15km away)

Meta review

Probably the most famous tourist attraction in the region and it does not disappoint. Reviewers are impressed by the huge scale and quality of the replicas that makes for an experience quite different from that of a museum. The onsite cafe also gets positive comments.

Environmental & Social

Some electricity consumption (lighting and heating/cooling) The museum helps preserve the region's cultural heritage and educate visitors.

Conclusion

The caves of Lascaux are without doubt the most famous for cave art and most people feel disappointed on having to settle for reproductions - fear not though because you are in for a treat. The museum might not be the real thing but is far more comfortable and allows for a much better viewing experience. The main issue in our opinion is price, but then Lascaux IV is no small investment.
