Périgueux Cathedral

Place de la Clautre, Périgueux, Nouvelle-Aquitaine

Description

Périgueux Cathedral, also known as Cathédrale Saint-Front (named after the first Bishop of the city), is a catholic church located in the city of Périgueux, the prefecture of the Dordogne department in southwestern France. A church was first built there in the 5th century and then an Abbey in the 11th century. It was then redesigned by architect Paul Abadie in the 2nd half of the 19th century (keeping the original bell tower and crypts) with inspiration from St. Mark's Basilica in Venice.

Access & Transport

The cathedral is in the center of the city, near the Dordogne river and 1.2km from the train station. From Bordeaux, it is a 1h10min train ride (direct on regional lines headed to Limoges) or a 1h30mins 120kms drive going through Libourne on the N89/A89. Bergerac is 45kms to the southwest (45mins drive) and Brive 80kms to the east (1h drive on the A89).

Instructions & Recommendations

We highly recommend dedicating a full day to the city, including the Vesunna Gallo-Roman Museum.

Meta review

Reviews are almost unanimous; the cathedral is the most impressive monument in the city thanks to a striking exterior architecture. The interior feels a little empty and soulless for many though.

Environmental & Social

Environmentally neutral. The cathedral is part of the city's cultural and architectural heritage

Conclusion

The Cathédrale Saint-Front is the city's architectural highlight and even though its interior might be slightly underwhelming for religious art lovers, the massive structure with its distinctive architecture is worth a special trip - the perfect excuse to include Périgueux in one's itinerary.

Suitable for all ages but expect younger children not to be interested in spending time inside. The ground floor seems accessible for visitors with reduced mobility.
