Description
Sarlat-la-Canéda (commonly referred simply as "Sarlat") is a well-known medieval town in the "Perigord Noir" region of Dordogne, in southwestern France. Historically it developed around a Benedictine abbey that was first mentioned in records from the 11th century and because of its "un-strategic" geographic position it has remained unscathed through the various wars across several centuries. The main sights include the Cathedral of Saint Sacerdos, the fountain Ste Marie and generally its streets, squares and market.
Access & Transport
Sarlat is on the train line from Bordeaux (2h20mins) and Bergerac (1h05mins). Those are also the closest airports. By car, Bordeaux is about 200km away (2h20mins) and Bergerac 75km (1h25mins).
Instructions & Recommendations
The city can be visited as a day trip or can be used as a base to explore the many surrounding attractions such as the Commarque Castle, Beynac with its castle and river cruise, or the Marqueyssac gardens.
Environmental & Social
The main activities in the city have a low carbon footprint. Tourism has become one of the main sources of revenues for the local economy, with the usual caveats relating to over-commercialization.
Conclusion
Sarlat is so picturesque and charming that it is impossible not to recommend a visit there - almost a compulsory stop on any itinerary in Dordogne. However, come July & August you will not be alone, so if that is when you schedule your trip you may consider other lesser-known alternatives in the department or the Lot next door (and promise yourself to come back another time in Spring or the Fall).
