Vesunna - by Phllip Spencer on Google
Description
Vesunna is a museum developed around a Gallo Roman house discovered in the city of Périgueux in 1959. The "domus of Vésone" dates from around the 2nd century AD and the ruins are now protected by a glass museum designed by architect Jean Nouvel. The collection includes artefacts discovered in the Dordogne area and a model of the domus / house.
Access & Transport
The museum is near the center of the city and a 5mins walk from the train station. From Bordeaux, it is a 1h10min train ride (direct on regional lines headed to Limoges) or a 1h30mins 120kms drive going through Libourne on the N89/A89. Bergerac is 45kms to the southwest (45mins drive) and Brive 80kms to the east (1h drive on the A89).
Instructions & Recommendations
We suggest combining the museum with a visit of Periguex, including its Cathedral.
Environmental & Social
Some electricity consumption (lighting and heating/cooling) + purpose-built structure. The museum helps preserve the city's cultural and architectural heritage and educate visitors.
Conclusion
The Vesunna Gallo-Roman Museum is a well-executed project; it manages to enhance the ruins seamlessly blending with its surroundings - the design is almost worth a visit by itself. In terms of content, visitors should expect some interesting insights into life in the Roman times. Highly recommended if you are in Périgueux.
