Description
The Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve ("DDCR") tour described here is operated by Platinum Heritage on a shared vehicle basis (max 4 guests per car). There are a few other operators to DDCR but not many. The list can be found on the reserve's website. You will be picked up between 06h30 and 7h30 from your hotel in Dubai (or the closest hotel from where you are staying) in a Range Rover and will be driven to the Reserve and the Royal Lake in order to spot and observe wildlife there. Expect to see some Oryx, gazelles, desert monitors and several species of birds. Afterwards, you will be having breakfast in the luxurious Al Maha Resort - this includes tea, coffee, juice, and buffet or a la carte breakfast. After breakfast, you will be driven back to the city and dropped off at your hotel.
Access & Transport
Transport is included (pick up and drop off from hotel) and is part of the adventure
Instructions & Recommendations
Note that children under 10 years are not allowed on this tour and that the drive is not recommended for women within their last trimester of pregnancy. Make sure to bring sunglasses, a hat/cap and your camera.
Environmental & Social
The objective of the DDCR is to conserve the Dubai's Inland Desert original landscapes and indigenous fauna and flora. From a social standpoint, this promotes the use of well trained and qualified guides.
Conclusion
A tour within the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve is probably your best opportunity to observe desert wildlife in their natural habitat - note that this is far from an African safari looking for the big 5 though. The attractiveness of the tour really depends on (i) your interest in wildlife and (ii) your budget, as this is not a cheap option. However, if both boxes are ticked, this certainly deserve your attention.
