Riverland Dubai

Sheikh Zayed Road, Dubai, Dubai

Description

Riverland Dubai defines itself as a themed retail and dining destination. There you can find many restaurants and stores in 4 different areas: The French Village with its traditional cobblestones, Boardwalk with its nostalgic mid-19th century Californian atmosphere, India Gate with its colourful Mumbai style streets and The Peninsula with its Italian style architecture, including bridges and a canal (!). Access is free and the complex is part of Dubai Parks and Resort that also includes 3 theme parks and one water park

Access & Transport

Dubai Park and Resorts integrated development is located in the Jebel Ali part of the emirate, along Sheikh Zaeed Road, close to the Al Maktoum International Airport. The easiest way is to go by car, with plenty of free parking onsite. Alternatively, it is possible to take the metro line until Ibn Battuta station and then take a shuttle bus (service DPR1) or take a taxi from there.

Instructions & Recommendations

This is an interesting place to stroll around and take pictures in (although for Europeans or North Americans it can seem very artificial) but probably not worth the drive to Jebel Ali as a standalone activity. However, it works perfectly as the shopping and dining partner to one of the 4 surrounding theme parks.

Meta review

The place seems to be quite popular with Dubai residents (as opposed to tourists) who enjoy the very different architecture. However, it seems that foot traffic is actually low, and many restaurants are closed.

Environmental & Social

The construction of the complex would have entailed some large construction work and use of raw materials, but the running energy and water intensity is more moderate. We have insufficient data to comment on social aspects

Conclusion

Riverland is probably the best dining option for visitors to one of the 4 surrounding theme and water parks. It is also popular with Dubai residents looking for a change of atmosphere. However, the number of restaurants that are actually open begs the question of long-term viability of the complex

Impressive re-creation of neighbourhoods from distant lands and times

Next to several theme parks

Key negative

May feel too artificial for many

Restaurants are not authentic, at the very least in the French village.

Several restaurants are closed
