Alserkal Art District

First Al Khail Street, Dubai, Dubai

Description

Alserkal Avenue is an arts and culture hub located in the industrial zone of Al Quoz in Dubai. It was created in 2007 with the support of A.B.E. Alserkal and the first gallery (Ayyam Gallery) moved there in 2008 followed by Carbon 12 in 2009 - others followed and the block of warehouse spaces now houses 20 art galleries, cultural venues including 1 private museum (Salsali) as well as food and fashion / designer stores.

Access & Transport

Even though it is located in an industrial area, the Al Quoz district is still relatively central, easy to get to by car / taxi - there are some parking options there and in the immediate vicinity. Public transport is a less friendly option as the Al Safa metro is 2.5km away. Depending where you are coming from, bus can be an option with the closest stop on First Al Khail St, less than 5mins walk away.

Instructions & Recommendations

Galleries open from mid-morning until around 19h00, so any time is good, and you can have lunch / a snack or dinner in one of the fashionable cafes. There is no other tourist highlight nearby, the closest being the Mall of the Emirates/Ski Dubai and the Gold & Diamond Park.

Meta review

Most reviewers did enjoy their time at Al Serkal and recommend spending at least a couple of hours there. Most complaints center around the fact that many taxi driver are unfamiliar with the place

Environmental & Social

A lot of metal, concrete and air-conditioning so a clear environmental footprint, but nothing shocking either. From a social perspective this activity scores better, managing to create a sense of community in an industrial district but also supporting the arts and creativity in the city.

Conclusion

Alserkal Avenue showcases a very different side of Dubai and travellers with more than 3-4 days in town who enjoy art and hip neighbourhoods should check the place out.
