Burj Khalifa observation deck

1 Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Boulevard, Dubai, Dubai

Description

The Burj Khalifa is currently the tallest skyscraper in the world with a spire peaking at 828m. The Y-shaped building was designed by Adrian Smith of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill and is the centrepiece of the Downtown development that also includes Dubai Mall and the 12 ha artificial Burj Khalifa Lake. There are observation decks on level 124/125 at 452m above the ground as well as on level 148 (SKY) at 555m.

Access & Transport

Burj Khalifa is next to the Dubai Mall and a 10' walk to the Dubai Mall metro station (red line). It is easy to spot from anywhere in the city! The observation deck is accessed in less than 1 min. by high speed lifts.

Instructions & Recommendations

Given the popularity of this attraction, it is best to book tickets ahead of time. Prices do vary depending on the observation deck level and the time of the day. The price displayed in this review is for levels 124/125 (the cheapest option) on non-prime hours (prime hours are just before and around sunset time).

Meta review

As the tallest building in the world, it is no surprise that going up to the observation deck is extremely popular with visitors, most of whom come out very happy and impressed with the experience. The main complaints are that it is not possible to reschedule in case of sub-optimal weather and that the views are not really more impressive than from other (very) high rise hotels.

Environmental & Social

Building of the skyscraper necessitated 110,000 tonnes of concrete, 31,000 of steel and 26,000 glass panels as well as 22-million-man hours mostly from foreign labour. The energy intensity to operate the building is also quite high although it showcases some sustainability pedigree using solar panels to heat up water for residents and the air-conditioning condensate is used to cool DEWA's potable water.

Conclusion

Going up the observation decks of the Burj Khalifa is very much a bucket list type of activity. If ticking the box is important to you then by all means you will enjoy this, otherwise there may be more cost-effective alternatives to get panoramic views of the city
