Description
The Bur Dubai Grand Mosque is the city's main religious hub. It was first built in 1900 and then rebuilt twice thereafter. The building's main feature is its 70m minaret designed in Anatolian style (it looks like a lighthouse) and a large number of domes (9 large and 45 small ones). It can hold 1,200 worshippers and opens to non-Muslims in the morning from Sunday to Thursday.
Access & Transport
The mosque is located next to the Dubai Museum and other key tourists' attractions in the Bur Dubai district such as the Al Fahidi Quarter. The closest metro station is Sharaf DG (green line), about 1km away.
Instructions & Recommendations
Registration for the full tour can be done through the website. At the time of this review there was also the option of a "quick tour" for walk-in from 09h00 to 10h15. Visitors need to be dressed modestly, meaning their shoulders should be covered, pants / dresses below the knee and women are required to wear a headscarf.
Environmental & Social
The energy intensity required for the visit and run the mosque is quite minimal. Marginal cultural aspect
Conclusion
The Grand Mosque is worth checking out from the outside, but you will get much more out of the free morning tour (booking required). It will give non-Muslims an insight into some of the prayer related process.
Key positive
Centrally located in the Bur Dubai district
No fees
Key negative
The tours are only 5 mornings per week
Difficult to get good views of the mosque - not the most impressive building in Dubai
Suitability
In theory it is suitable for all ages but adults will get the most out of it. The tour is aimed at non-Muslims.
