Heritage Village - by Muhammed Musthafa on Google
Description
Dubai's Heritage and Diving Villages focus on the local traditional handcrafting and pearling industry, respectively. It is essentially an open-air museum featuring some weavers, potters, and traditional Emirati food.
Access & Transport
The complex is located in the Shindagha historical district, very close to the Sheikh Saeed Al Maktoum's House. The most convenient route is via the Metro, with Al Ghubaiba station (green line) a short 5 mins walk away. Visitors can also opt to take the bus to the same station or the ferry to the Al Ghubaiba Marine Transport Station and walk the remaining 500m along the Creek.
Instructions & Recommendations
We recommend travellers to combine this activity with another museum in the Al Shindagha historic neighbourhood such as the Crossroads of Civilization Museum.
Environmental & Social
This activity is neutral from an environmental standpoint and marginally positive in terms of keeping the traditional culture alive.
Conclusion
The Heritage and Diving village can feel artificial and aimed at tourists only - probably true, but then is there an alternative way to preserve the essence of a disappearing lifestyle, even if only in a slightly cliché format? With no entrance fee, there is little downside and surely some enjoyment to be had to witness traditional cooking, craftsmen and learn about the pearl diving industry of the pre-modern era.
