Jumeirah Mosque - guided tour

Jumeirah Street, Dubai, Dubai

Description

The Jumeirah Mosque in Dubai is one of the emirate's religious landmarks. It welcomes visitors of all faiths most mornings for guided visits during which visitors can learn about Islam and the local culture. The mosque is built entirely from white stone in the medieval Fatimid tradition (the 10-12th century caliphate) with 2 minarets and a large dome. The building can contain up to 1,200 worshippers

Access & Transport

The mosque's location is quite central in the Jumeirah neighbourhood, close to the beach and the Etihad Museum. Like most places in the city, taxi is the easiest way to reach there.

Instructions & Recommendations

The tours last 75 mins and are run 6 days a week (closed on Fridays - the sacred day of worship in Islam) by the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding. For the morning tour, registration is at 9h30 with the visit starting at 10h00 and for the afternoon registration is at 13h30 with tour starting at 14h00 All visitors need to dress modestly (traditional attire is available to borrow) and women are asked to wear a scarf over their head and cover their shoulders during the visit.

Meta review

Most reviewers did enjoy the concept of the tour and the light refreshments. The main recurring complaints are about the inability to visit outside of the guided tours and that the information provided by the guides is quite basic.

Environmental & Social

Neutral from an environmental perspective and minor cultural aspect.

Conclusion

One of the few mosques open to non-Muslims in the city so, for those interested in an Islam 101 explanation, this is a good place to invest 1.5-2h. If you are already well versed in the culture then you may want to allocate time to another activity such as the nearby Etihad Museum.

Key positive

Good concept to introduce tourists to some of the key tenets of Islam and mosque prayers

An opportunity to discover some emirati snacks

Key negative

Only two tours per day makes it slightly inflexible

No in-depth information

Suitability

No religious denomination restrictions. Remember to dress modestly, i.e. cover your legs and shoulders when entering the mosque
