Description
Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary is a wetland reserve alongside Dubai Creek, just east of Downtown Dubai. It serves as a protected breeding ground for flamingos and herons as well as some mammals, fishes, and crustaceans. The habitats span a variety of mini-ecosystems such as mangroves, lagoons and inter-tidal mudflats.
Access & Transport
The reserve is in a public transport blind spot, so best to take a taxi or drive there. There is onsite parking.
Instructions & Recommendations
Visitors are allowed to observe the birds in their habitat so the following should be in your packing list, if possible: binoculars, camera with zoom lens and a bird guide. Within the sanctuary, it is forbidden to bring pets, food, drinks and use your phone (other than as a camera).
Environmental & Social
Completely neutral in terms of carbon footprint and the objective is to protect wildlife's natural environment so scores high in that respect.
Conclusion
This wildlife sanctuary, pretty much in the middle of the city, is worth a visit for those who enjoy observing animals in their natural habitat rather than on display in the zoo or in a show - without having to take a much longer drive out of Dubai city. Ideally you would want to carry some binoculars and a good camera.
Key positive
Quite central
No fee and no commercial aspects
Key negative
The variety of animals that can be observed is still relatively limited
Huts do not have a large capacity so it can quickly become crowded
Difficult to get to by public transport
Suitability
Suitable for all ages, in particular bird and other animal lovers - but it might be difficult to keep very young kids quiet. Because the natural environment has mostly been preserved with minimal human footprint, visitors with mobility issues may not be able to get around very easily.
