Description
The origin of the Souqs of Deira goes back to the mid 19th century, a time when Dubai was mostly a regional trading center with the Dubai Creek forming the best natural harbour, hence the choice of location. The Souqs (meaning market in Arabic) can be split across specialities: Gold (with a wide selection of jewellery), Spices (including saffron), Perfume (also selling incenses and oils) and Textile (located across the Creek in Bur Dubai).
Access & Transport
As the name suggests, the Souqs are in Deira, just across the Creek from Bur Dubai. It can be accessed by road through the Shindagha Tunnel or one of the bridges upstream. There are also 3 metro stations (on the green line) nearby: Al Ras, Gold Souq and Banyas Square.
Instructions & Recommendations
If you are looking to buy something, we recommend you do your research in terms of price and get acquainted with the traditional bazar negotiating techniques. Bring a camera to photograph the various scenes and goods on display.
Environmental & Social
It encourages consumerism but the activity itself is not very energy intensive. Slightly positive aspects in keeping the local culture and community alive.
Conclusion
We would recommend a visit to the Souqs, even if you are not interested in buying anything - but go with the mind of a spectator to a show so you don't get frustrated with the haggling and uninterrupted attempts at selling you something.

Potentially a good place to buy some souvenirs
Key negative
