The Palm Jumeirah

The Palm Jumeirah - by Hari Das on Google
Description
The Palm Jumeirah is a unique and iconic residential and commercial complex developed in Dubai through land reclamation. From the air, it does look exactly like a palm tree with a central trunk, 8 branches on each side (called "fronds") and a surrounding circle. The dimensions are mind numbing: about 5km long and 5km wide so that the crescent itself is 17m long - it is connected by road and monorail to the mainland. There are over 20 hotels, several malls and over 10,000 people living on the Palm.
Access & Transport
Taxi is a the most flexible option but the monorail that connects the Atlantis hotel to that gateway station is worth a try (a little pricey though at AED30 for a 1-way adult ticket at the time of research) and takes only 10 minutes with 3 intermediary stations. The crescent is accessed by a short tunnel at the top of the trunk
Instructions & Recommendations
With plenty of different attractions, restaurants, and malls inside, The Palm can be visited at any time of the day although there might not be much to do before mid-morning. Going to your destination by taxi is most probably the cheapest and fastest way to get there but it may be worth trying the monorail on the way back if you are curious about it. Pretty much the entire sea front consists of private properties and distances are quite large so don't plan on spending much time strolling and look up what you are keen to visit (e.g. The Atlantis hotel or a specific beach club) before you get there.
Environmental & Social
They were some significant local environmental impacts to the development of the Palm through dredging. Also, many foreign workers involved in the reclamation and development
Conclusion
The Palm is certainly an engineering feat but, unless you get to see it from high up (Sky dive The Palm or some of the high-rise hotels), it actually is not a sightseeing destination. Rather, one should think about it as an agglomeration of activities, hotels with nice restaurants and beaches, and a few commercial centers. And plenty of houses and condominiums.
Key positive
Some good activities there such as Aquaventure Waterpark and the Lost Chambers Aquarium
Plenty of beach and restaurant options
Key negative
Not much to see from ground level
Not a "green" development by any measure
Suitability
Suitable for all ages, including children. No accessibility restrictions
