Waterfront Market, Dubai

Al Khaleej Road, Dubai, Dubai

Description

The Waterfront Market is located in Deira, not far from the Deira old souqs. It is the main fresh seafood market in Dubai and an extensive redevelopment of what used to be the old Deira Fish Market. Besides seafood, meat, fruits and vegetables are also sold there in wholesale fashion.

Access & Transport

Located in Northern Deira, about 4km away from the Old Deira Souqs, the market is best accessed by car. The closest metro station are Salah Al Din and Abu Bakker Al Siddique, 3km away. Note that there is a ferry pier (called Waterfront Market) right next to the market so that can be a different option as well.

Instructions & Recommendations

The main "attraction" here is the fish market but it is also a good place to buy fruits and vegetables if you need to stock up. We would not recommend the place to vegetarians / animal lovers. Try to avoid the deep cleaning slot which is 14h00-16h00 every day except Fridays (12h30-14h30).

Meta review

Reviews are very positive with most visitors enjoying the sheer variety of fish, fruits and vegetables and the dining options (including the ability to have fish cooked there) whilst the main complaint is around the smell of fish and the need to bargain on prices

Environmental & Social

Some ethical issues to be considered about eating animals and around the supply chain but we have insufficient information to comment about the latter.

Conclusion

It is always interesting to look at food wholesale markets in various cities around the world and Dubai is no exception. The developing array of dining options is also a plus. We would recommend visiting if you need to restock and/or if you have plans to be in the Deira neighbourhood (for the souqs most likely).

Key positive

Spacious and well-maintained complex with lots of variety

Integrated dining options

Good for fresh fruits; dates in particular

Key negative

The sight of fish and meat for sale is not for everyone

Need to negotiate price

Suitability

We would not recommend going to the fish and meat sections with young children. The market is accessible to wheelchair users.
