Ardgillan Castle and Demesne

Description

Ardgillan Castle and Demesne is a country house & park near the shoreline of the Irish Sea between Balbriggan and Skerries in County Dublin. The mid-18th century house consists of two storeys over a basement, it has been renovated and is open to visitors. The park has a mix of woodlands and large grass open spaces overlooking Barnageera Beach in some areas. It also contains a walled herb garden, a rose garden, a Victorian conservatory, tea rooms, and a kids' playground.

Access & Transport

The estate is 30km north of Dublin's city centre. The route is signposted from the M1; travelling from Dublin exit at Junction 5. There is free parking on site. Directions: https://ardgillancastle.ie/visit-us/

Instructions & Recommendations

The playground and castle open a little after the park and close earlier.

Meta review

This is one of the traditionally shortlisted day-out options from Dublin and both travel bloggers and online reviewers generally have a very good experience there, except for the service and food quality at the coffeeshop - so this is definitely the place to bring a picnic. Visitors enjoy the well-kept grounds, the walled garden, the walking trails, the playground, all this without having to pay admission fees. Positive feedback about the house tours as well.

Environmental & Social

Green attraction and preserves the region's architectural heritage

Conclusion

Ardgillan Castle and the surrounding estate are very much a recommended visit for Dublin-based families and lovers of countryside gardens. Make sure to choose a sunny day and bring a picnic.
