Dublin Zoo

Chesterfield Avenue, Dublin, County Dublin

Description

Dublin Zoo (Zú Bhaile Átha Cliath) is home to over 400 animals from 100+ species divided into various habitats such as the Himalayan Hills, Wolves in the Woods, the African Savanna, the World of Primates or the Kaziranga Forest Trail. The zoo is a non-profit organisation and its main conservation effort is in breeding endangered species.

Access & Transport

The zoo is located on the eastern side of Phoenix Park The bus routes that stop closest to Dublin Zoo are: C1, C2, C3, C4, C5, 26, 46A, 69. Alternatively, the Heuston train and tram station is a 20mins' walk away. The Lord’s Walk car park is located beside Dublin Zoo

Instructions & Recommendations

We suggest combining his activity with a walk within Phoenix Park, the president residence (The Lord’s Walk car park is located beside Dublin Zoo) is about a 10mins walk away. Alternatively, the National Museum of Ireland - Decorative Arts and History is 1.5km away (20mins walk)

Meta review

The zoo is not generally considered one of the star attractions of Dublin and online reviews (ignoring the numerous fake entries) are mostly good but not much more than that. Visitors acknowledge it is relatively large but also note the variety of animals is limited. They also mention entrance is expensive, but then most things are in the city, and the enclosures are decently sized for a zoo. The food is also described as tasteless and expensive and there are several handy playgrounds for families with younger children.

Environmental & Social

Involved in several conservation projects and breeding programmes that partially mitigate for the animals being kept in captivity. Details here: https://www.dublinzoo.ie/conservation-in-action/

Conclusion

The zoo is one the best family activities in town but isn't great value, especially as its range of species is somewhat limited (for a capital city) - so fans of large zoos may be underwhelmed.
