Description
The Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA) is housed in the 17th-century Royal Hospital Kilmainham in Dublin, the building was modelled on Les Invalides in Paris with long corridors surrounding a central courtyard. The collection is focused on modern & contemporary art from post-WW2 and features a mix of Irish and international artists. It also regularly hosts temporary exhibitions.
Access & Transport
IMMA is located in the western part of Dublin, an 8mins walk from Heuston train and tram (red line) station via Military Road For drivers, there is a car park on site. Directions: https://imma.ie/visit/info/directions/
Instructions & Recommendations
We suggest combining this activity with a visit of Kilmainham Gaol or Phoenix Park and the Dublin Zoo (a more suitable alternative for families with younger children).
Environmental & Social
Minor electricity consumption and helps preserve the city's architectural heritage.
Conclusion
Unless you are really into contemporary art, we would rather recommend IMMA to those who enjoy old building architectures, in this case the Royal Hospital Kilmainham. This way, the exhibitions inside the museum should be considered as a potential bonus.
Key positive
Impressive building & garden complex
Key negative
Inconsistent quality of exhibitions and average permanent collection
