Phoenix Park, Dublin

Phoenix park, Saint James' (part of Phoenix Park), County Dublin

Description

Phoenix Park is a large urban park (700ha, 11km perimeter) located in western Dublin. It was developed on the grounds of a royal hunting lodge and mostly consists of grassland intersected by tree-lined avenues. It is also home to a herd of wild fallow deer. There are several buildings and monuments located within the park such as Áras an Uachtaráin, the residence of the president of Ireland, the 62m tall obelisk of the Wellington Monument commemorating the victories of the Duke of Wellington, Magazine Fort, the Papal Fort, and the Dublin Zoo.

Access & Transport

The park is 3-5km northwest of the city centre, just north of the River Liffey. Heuston Station is a short walk to the Parkgate Street (Main Gate) entrance of the park (southwest corner) with 'Phoenix Park' and "Ashton" train stations providing a commuter alternative at the northern end of the park. There are also bus services stopping near several of the entrance gates and car park options inside.

Instructions & Recommendations

We suggest combining an exploration of the park with either the Dublin Zoo or the Farmleigh House & Estate. The Kilmainham Gaol and Irish Museum of Modern Art are also near the southern edge of the park.

Meta review

Online reviews are somewhat mixed with many visitors enjoying the walking or jogging opportunity offered by the wide expanses and the tame wild fallow deer whereas other note that it is more parkland than a park given the ground is mostly grass with no flowers and landscaping, and that there is no public transport option providing coverage inside the park which makes it mostly accessible and enjoyable for car drivers.

Environmental & Social

Green attraction. Enhances the living environment of residents.

Conclusion

Phoenix Park is, in our opinion, not really a tourist attraction but an area best enjoyed by residents for a weekend family outing or a run. That being said, it also makes for a pleasant walk on the way to/from several attractions such as the zoo or Farmleigh House & Estate.
