BOOK ACTIVITY

St. Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin

Saint Patrick's Close, County Dublin, County Dublin

Description

Saint Patrick's Cathedral (Ard-Eaglais Naomh Pádraig) was built in the 13th century on the site of an earlier church in Gothic style with pointed arches and flying buttresses. It underwent regular restoration works in the 17th century when the Lady Chapel was made available for use of French-speaking Huguenots who had fled to Ireland. The choir, arguably the highlight of the structure, was reformed in the 1680's. The main figure associated with the cathedral is that of Jonathan Swift (author of Gulliver's Travels) who gave many sermons in his quality as dean there from 1713 to 1745.

Access & Transport

The church is framed by Patrick Street and St Patrick's Park, about 700m south of the River Liffey, in the centre of Dublin. Several bus services stop next to the building and the St Stephen's Green tram stop (green line) is a 10mins walk to the east.

Instructions & Recommendations

We suggest combining this activity with either a visit to Dublin Casle or Dublinia.

Meta review

One of the main religious structures in the city with consistent online reviews that highlight the beautiful stained-glass windows, the grounds, and the historical background which is well conveyed through the self-guided audio-tour. The only recurring complaint relates to the admission fee and the commercial feel created by the out of place souvenir shop, a point that management clarifies is necessary for the ongoing renovation and upkeep of the building.

Environmental & Social

Environmentally neutral, involved with some charities, and preserves the city's architectural and historical heritages.

Conclusion

St Patrick's Cathedral is visually enjoyable but architecturally a step down from the most impressive churches of Europe. However, it does have a long and interesting history so we would still recommend this visit

Key positive

Enjoyable stained-glass windows

Audio-guide conveys historical background well

Key negative

Marginally expensive and commercial

Suitability

Accessible for visitors with reduced mobility. No religious denomination restrictions
