Boboli Gardens & Bardini Garden, Florence

1 Piazza de' Pitti, Firenze, Toscana

Description

The Boboli Gardens were designed in the mid-16th century for the Medici whose main residence was the Palazzo Pitti, next to it. It is very open with a long axis, statues scattered throughout as well as some fountains (e.g. the Fountain of Neptune and the Fountain of the Ocean) and caves such as the famous grotto realized by Bernardo Buontalenti The Bardini Garden is located between the Boboli Gardens and the Piazzale Michelangelo. The main design feature is its Baroque staircase that culminates with a small belvedere offering visitors a panoramic view of Florence. The Bardini Villa, next to the garden, was built in the 17th century and houses the Capucci Museum, the Annigoni Museum, and temporary exhibitions.

Access & Transport

The Piti Palace and Boboli Gardens are 300m south of the Ponte Vecchio. Buses C3 and C4 stop next to the entrance on Pitti Square. There is another entrance further south at Porta Romana Square. Entrance to the Bardini Garden is at Via dei Bardi 1 or Costa San Giorgio 2 Buses C3 and C4 also stop close by, next to Ponte alle Grazie.

Instructions & Recommendations

At the time of this review, the Porcelain Museum was closed for renovation. The entrance for the Bardini Garden is combined with that of the Boboli Garden. Opening hours are 10h to 19h/20h. Last admission to both gardens is 1h before closing time

Meta review

A lot of online reviewers expressing disappointment for the Boboli Gardens; the views are fine, but the grounds are regularly described as not being well maintained - not one of the best gardens in the country by any stretch despite the many interesting statues. As for Bardini, the average upkeep is also pointed out though some find it gives it a certain charm, the patina of age... The design is very different with a marked slope for a much more intimate feel but not as grand as Boboli.

Environmental & Social

Green attractions. Socially neutral.

Conclusion

Good if combined with the Palazzo Pitti but given the current lack of investment in the upkeep we would not make it a priority. Those looking for green spaces are better heading out to the Tuscan countryside!

Key negative

Not well kept
