Medici Chapel, Florence

6 Piazza di Madonna degli Aldobrandini, Firenze, Toscana

Description

The Medici Chapels (Cappelle Medicee) are extensions of the Basilica of San Lorenzo in Florence dating from the 16th and 17th centuries. Commissioned to celebrate the Medici family (patrons of the art and the Church), they consist of the Sagrestia Nuova designed by Michelangelo and the larger Cappella dei Principi ("Chapel of the Princes"). The former was intended as a mausoleum for members of the Medici family and includes several tombs and sculptures by famous artists. The Cappella dei Principi is octogonal in shape and surmounted by a 59m-high dome. The interior is inlaid with coloured marbles and semi-precious stones.

Access & Transport

The complex de San Lorenzo is 150m northwest of Piazza di Duomo and the Cathedral. Bus C1 stops next to the chapels on Piazza di Madonna degli Aldobrandini.

Instructions & Recommendations

We suggest combining this activity with a visit of the rest of the San Lorenzo complex. The Basilica of Santa Maria Novella and the Riccardi Medici Palace are also both a short walk away (but in different directions).

Meta review

Described as a highlight by travel guides and online reviewers alike; visitors do find the reliquaries and artefacts quite interesting and impressive but the stunner really is the sumptuously decorated Chapel of the Princes - a testament to the power of the Medici family. The main drawback is practical in nature: there can be long lines so you may consider booking 'skip-the-line' tickets.

Environmental & Social

We deem this activity environmentally neutral. Helps preserve the city's architectural and artistic heritages.

Conclusion

The Medici Chapels are one-of-a-kind religious monument and, with a few exceptions, this would top the list of places to visit in most cities... but this is Firenze, the pearl of the Renaissance, and there are lots of competing venues. If you only have a couple of days in the city then this is best reserved to religious art enthusiasts; with 3 full days or more, it should be on your list.
