Museo Galileo, Florence

1 Piazza dei Giudici, Firenze, Toscana

Description

The Museo Galileo (formerly the Museum of the History of Science) exhibits collections of historical scientific instruments centred around the Medici and Lorraine collections. It is dedicated to astronomer and scientist Galileo Galilei and is housed in the 11th-century Palazzo Castellani. Key artefacts include Galileo's two extant telescopes, the objective lens used during his discovery of the Galilean moons of Jupiter, terrestrial and celestial globes (including Santucci's Armillary Sphere), and instrumental apparatus used in the country during research (and discoveries!) related to chemistry, electricity, and electromagnetism.

Access & Transport

The museum is by the Arno river, next to Uffizi Gallery, and only about 200m from the Ponte Vecchio. Bus C1 stops up the Via dei Castellani and it is a 5mins walk across the bridge to the C3 and C4 bus stops. The entrance for disabled visitors is located on the Lungarno Anna Maria Luisa de' Medici 2; it is necessary to request the intervention of an operator through the intercom.

Meta review

Online reviews are very consistent: a small museum with a lot of potential but let down by the lack of information (and a buggy or impractical app). The scientific instruments are genuinely interesting and impressive but context is lacking.

Environmental & Social

We deem this activity neutral from an environmental standpoint. Helps preserve the country's technological heritage + educational aspects (despite the lack of explanations).

Conclusion

A good option for the scientifically minded but the educational aspects are unfortunately lacking. Maybe do some reading on your mobile phone as you go along...

Key positive

Instruments with high scientific and historical value

Gorgeous celestial and terrestrial globes

Key negative

Lack of information around exhibits

Quite small

Suitability

Accessible and suitable for both adults and children 8yrs and above
