Piazzale Michelangelo, Florence - by Dan D on Google
Description
Piazzale Michelangelo offers visitors a panoramic view of Florence. It was designed by architect Giuseppe Poggi and built in 1869 on a hill just south of the historic center, during the redevelopment of the Oltrarno neighbourhood. The square is dedicated to the Renaissance sculptor Michelangelo and decorated with bronze copies of some of his work.
Access & Transport
The square is 1km southeast of the Ponte alle Grazie, on the southern bank of the Arno river. One can drive there, take bus 12 or 13 from the city centre, or walk from Piazza Poggi / Porta San Niccolo (at the foot of the hill).
Instructions & Recommendations
Early morning is not busy and sunset probably has the best light conditions
Environmental & Social
Socially neutral and no carbon footprint
Conclusion
Probably a good idea to get a different perspective over the city and expand your line of sight after hours of museum, piazza and palace visits. Don't expect to be alone though, unless you go first thing in the morning. Use the stairs and explore the Oltrarno district on your way there or afterwards.
