Riccardi Medici Palace - by Gryffindor (CC BY 3.0)
Description
The Palazzo Medici Riccardi was commissioned by Cosimo de' Medici, head of the Medici banking family, and designed by Michelozzo di Bartolomeo. It was built in the second half of the 15th century with a façade showing a tripartite division accentuating the height of the building whilst remaining quite understated. Inside, there are courtyards, chambers, anti-chambers, studies, and the famous Magi Chapel. The chapel was frescoed by Benozzo Gozzoli who inserted several scenes alluding to the Council of Florence (1438-1439). There are also several works of art by Filippo Lippi.
Access & Transport
The palace is 150m north of Piazza di Duomo and the Cathedral. Buses C1, 14 and 23 stop next to the building on Via de' Gori.
Instructions & Recommendations
Please note that the number of visitors allowed inside the Chapel of the Magi is limited to 10 people every 5 minutes, and the visit duration is 5 minutes. We suggest combining this activity with a visit of Florence Cathedral or the Medici Chapel
