Uffizi Gallery, Florence

6 Piazzale degli Uffizi, Firenze, Toscana

Description

The Uffizi Gallery (Galleria degli Uffizi) is one of Italy's main museums, having inherited the core of its collection from the House of Medici (bequeathed to the city of Florence in the mid-18th century). The complex was designed by Giorgio Vasari and built for Cosimo I de' Medici between 1560 and 1580 to accommodate the offices ('uffizi') of the Florentine magistrates. The highlights are the collection of sculptures and paintings from the 14th century and Renaissance period by artists such as Lippi, Botticelli, Raffaello or Michelangelo. There are also some prints, drawings, and books.

Access & Transport

The museum is directly south of the Piazza della Signoria and 150m from the Ponte Vecchio. Bus C1 stops at Piazza del Grano. The access ramp to the Uffizi's loggia is located in via della Ninna and the accessible entrance to the museum is in the Vasari Auditorium.

Instructions & Recommendations

We suggest combining this activity with the Palazzio Vecchio, Piazza della Signoria, and either cross the Ponte Vecchio or go for another cultural round at the Museo Galileo.

Meta review

Always described as one of the best activities in Florence by travel guides and bloggers, opinions from online reviewers are equally excellent as relates to the quality of the art and the way it is exhibited. It is the practical aspects that draw negative comments: very crowded (in the summer in particular) which the 'skip-the line' tickets seem to only partially avoid and the relatively high price - although on that point the complaints come from European travellers comparing it to other European museums and certainly not from North American tourists who are used to museums priced at over 20€.

Environmental & Social

No environmental data available online. We deem this activity marginally negative from an environmental standpoint (electricity). Helps preserve the city's and country's architectural and artistic heritages.

Conclusion

One of the top sights of Florence for most travellers, alongside the Cathedrale and the Ponte Vecchio, and it doesn't disappoint. This is Renaissance art at its best with architecture and display to match. Avoid the summer months for a better, less busy experience and upgrade to an audio-guide or even a guided tour if that is within your budget.
