Fresno Chaffee Zoo - by Flyfresno (BY-SA 4.0)
Description
Fresno Chaffee Zoo is located in Roeding Park in Fresno, California. It houses nearly 200 species of animals across its various sections: African Adventure, Stingray Bay, Twiga Terrace, Zoorassic Park (no live dinosaur, sorry), Reptile House, Tropical Rainforest, Dino Dig, Roo Walkabout, Sea Lion Cove, Wilderness Falls and the recently opened 'Kingdoms of Asia'. It also stages a bird show called 'Winged Wonders' twice a day (10h30 and 13h00 at the time of this review).
Access & Transport
The zoo is in the northwest of Fresno, just off exit 134 of the CA-99 onto Belmont Avenue. Parking cost $5 Bus 33 also stops on Belmont Av. but doesn't connect directly to downtown.
Instructions & Recommendations
Daily schedules for shows and 'Keeper chat' can be found here: https://www.fresnochaffeezoo.org/keeper-chats/
Environmental & Social
Involved in endangered species breeding programs and supports several conservation projects: https://www.fresnochaffeezoo.org/wildlife-conservation-fund/
Conclusion
The zoo makes for a good family excursion for travellers passing through the area but doesn't justify a meaningful detour. We think it is best enjoyed by residents with an annual membership, which has the benefit of bringing down the per-visit cost significantly. The conservation efforts are commandable even though keeping animals in enclosures is an obvious ethical issue.
