Al Bidya Mosque, Fujairah

, Al Bidya, Fujairah

Description

Al-Bidya Mosque is located in the Emirate of Fujairah and is estimated to have been built in the 15th century, making it one of the oldest in the United Arab Emirates. The structure is very small, only 53m2, and primarily built of stones and mud bricks. A central pillar divides the space into four areas, each topped by a dome.

Access & Transport

The main Rugaylar Rd (E99) goes past the monument, about 40km north of Fujairah City. Driving direction: use the plus code 'C9Q3+G7 Al Bidya, Fujairah'

Instructions & Recommendations

Make sure you are wearing appropriate clothes if you wish to enter and take a few minutes to discover the watchtowers, atop the hill above the mosque.

Meta review

Most visitors enjoy their visit, describing the structure as small but worth a stop whereas others find it unimpressive and mention that the surroundings are not well kept. Easy to find and park, in any case.

Environmental & Social

No environmental impact. Helps preserve the emirate's architectural heritage

Conclusion

Al Bidya Mosque might be old yet it lacks historical significance for visitors from outside of the UAE, even in a religious context. A nice stop for those driving through but not worth a dedicated trip, in our opinion

Key positive

Well preserved

Key negative

Small and architecturally plain

Suitability

No religious denomination restrictions except when prayers are taking place. Need to be dressed conservatively
