Arena of Nîmes

Boulevard des Arènes, Nîmes, Occitanie

Description

The Arena of Nîmes is one of the best-preserved Roman amphitheatres in the world. It was built in the 1st century AD (about 20yrs after the Colosseum of Rome) and designed for public shows with two tiers of arcades framing an oval track of 68x38m (the entire structure itself is 133x101m). Visitors, led by an audioguide, can reach the top of the arena by walking through the galleries, the stairs and the stands. The monument is complemented by two museum spaces dedicated to the world of gladiators and bulls (two annual bullfights are held there during the Feria de Nîmes).

Access & Transport

The amphitheatre is located in the historical centre of Nimes, 600m from the train station. There is an underground carpark nearby on Bvd de Bruxelles. Nimes is 50km northeast of Montpellier, 30km northeast of Arles and 45km southwest of Avignon. The town is on the Paris-Lyon-Montpellier high speed train line and regional lines towards Arles and Alès. Accessibility info: https://www.arenes-nimes.com/tourisme-handicap

Instructions & Recommendations

There are combined tickets for The Maison Carrée + Tour Magne + Arènes (Amphitheatre) as well as those 3 monuments together with the Musée de la Romanité. We suggest visiting this attraction alongside the neighbouring Romanité Museum.

Meta review

A famous monument, regularly featured in travel magazines and blogs. The online reviews are quite consistent in describing the structure as spectacular, the audio-guide as interesting (though the upgrade to a guided visit is worth considering) and the overall state of preservation very impressive. The only drawback is that the interior arena is at times occupied by metal stands, which negatively impacts the visual impression.

Environmental & Social

Environmentally neutral. Part of the town's architectural and historical heritages

Conclusion

The Arena of Nîmes is a regional highlight and the excellent state of preservation is striking, in particular in comparison with its Rome counterpart. Clearly some overlap with the Arènes d'Arles but otherwise this is a must see.
