Description
The Pont du Gard is one of the best-preserved Roman aqueduct bridges and arguably the tallest and most impressive still standing. It spans the river Gardon and was built in the 1st century AD to carry water over 50km to the Roman colony of Nemausus (Nîmes). The structure is made of Shelly limestone, has three tiers of arches and stands 49m high with a total length of 275m. The complex is complemented by a museum exhibiting the importance of water in Roman life.
Access & Transport
The monument is located roughly midway between Nîmes (27km) and Avignon (21km), near the A9 motorway, exit 23 (Remoulins). Supervised but unguarded car parks are available and cost €9/car per day. The closest train stations are Nîmes centre (there are some bus shuttles from there), Nîmes Pont du Gard, Avignon centre and Avignon TGV. There are also bus options.
