Pont du Gard

Route du Pont du Gard, Vers-Pont-du-Gard, Occitanie

Description

The Pont du Gard is one of the best-preserved Roman aqueduct bridges and arguably the tallest and most impressive still standing. It spans the river Gardon and was built in the 1st century AD to carry water over 50km to the Roman colony of Nemausus (Nîmes). The structure is made of Shelly limestone, has three tiers of arches and stands 49m high with a total length of 275m. The complex is complemented by a museum exhibiting the importance of water in Roman life.

Access & Transport

The monument is located roughly midway between Nîmes (27km) and Avignon (21km), near the A9 motorway, exit 23 (Remoulins). Supervised but unguarded car parks are available and cost €9/car per day. The closest train stations are Nîmes centre (there are some bus shuttles from there), Nîmes Pont du Gard, Avignon centre and Avignon TGV. There are also bus options. Meta review

An extremely famous monument and a key regional attraction well featured in travel guidebooks and websites. Online comments about the monument are nearly always excellent, putting it in the "unmissable" category and the museum also draws positive comments. Negative opinions strangely centre of the flat 9€ parking cost which many deem to be robbery - clearly forgetting that they would spend that amount without thinking twice in a bar or restaurant and that such parking fee would be considered very cheap in the UK or the USA.

Environmental & Social

Environmentally neutral (the museum's carbon footprint is reasonable on a per visitor basis) Helps preserve the architectural and historical heritages of the region

Conclusion

It is difficult to find anything negative to say.... the bridge is stunning and is testament to the engineering prowess of the Roman period + the setting makes it truly photogenic. Highly recommended and worth the drive.
