Geneva Botanical Garden

1 Chemin de l'Impératrice, Pregny-Chambésy, Genève

Description

The Conservatory and Botanical Garden of Geneva includes greenhouses, rock gardens, an arboretum, several banks of protected and medicinal plants, a library, and an herbarium with one of the largest collections of plants and fungi in the world (over 6m specimens). There is also a small zoo, a carrousel (paying), and a kids' playground.

Access & Transport

The gardens are right next to the Parc de l'Ariana, on the west side of Geneva, near the lakeshore The Genève-Sécheron train station (SL1, SL2, SL3, SL4) is at the southwest corner, bus stop 'Jardin Botanique' (1, 11, 22, 25) at the southeast corner, and the Nations tram stop (5) is a couple of mins walk away.

Instructions & Recommendations

Note that dogs and bikes are not allowed inside. We suggest combining this attraction with a visit to the Red Cross museum or the Palace of Nations (advance booking required)

Meta review

Not that many people seem to make the trek to that part of (greater) Geneva so it is never too busy but those who did explore comment positively on the greenhouses (the tropical one in particular), the zoo with peacocks, fallow deer and mountain goats that is a hit with younger children, the good maintenance, the free admission, and the multitude of information panel that will delight botany enthusiasts. Winter is not the best season to enjoy (although the greenhouses are still, well, green)

Environmental & Social

Green activity and educates visitors about flora and its diversity

Conclusion

Not one of Geneva's main attractions but an excellent option for residents, families, and those with an interest in botany

Key positive

Visually pleasant and relaxing environment

Children friendly + educational content

Key negative

Not very large or unique (except the herbarium)

Suitability
