Palais des Nations (guided tour)

Avenue de la Paix, Genève, Genève

Description

The Palais des Nations is the home of the United Nations in Geneva; it was built in the 1930s as the HQ of the League of Nations. Every year it is used for over 10,000 intergovernmental meetings. There are 60mins guided tours available in multiple languages during which visitors will learn more about the building as well as the various works carried out by the organization and discover famous rooms such as the Council Chamber or the Human Rights and Alliance of Civilizations Room, decorated by famous artist Miquel Barcelò (subject to daily schedule of meetings).

Access & Transport

The meeting point is at the Peace Gate of the Palais des Nations, in Ariana Park on the west side of Geneva. The Genève-Sécheron train station (SL1, SL2, SL3, SL4) and the Nations tram stop (5) are both a couple of mins walk on the south side of the park. Instructions & Recommendations

*** Due to important renovation works, guided tours for individual visitors are limited to a few tours per month. Availabilities are released the 15th of the month for the following month and tend to be booked up very quickly *** Important notes: a) As soon as you receive your ticket(s), every person in your group needs to register for an access badge: https://indico.un.org/event/1000169/registrations/ b) All visitors must carry a valid passport (or ID card from the Schengen zone) and arrive at the Peace Gate 30mins before the tour schedule start to allow time for security screening and transfer to the Visitors’ Center. c) slots get taken up quickly, we suggest booking 2 or even 3 months ahead of time

Meta review

Most online reviewers comment on the impressive building, the line of all the nations flags, and the Broken Chair sculpture but have not taken the tour, either because they did not know or did not plan sufficiently in advance so there was no availability. Those who did essentially describe it as interesting, checking out some of the large conference rooms, but nothing exciting. The architecture is quite dated in fact and there are some large ongoing renovation works (mentioned on the website).

Environmental & Social

Very large building but visits are far from being the primary use so we consider this activity environmentally (and socially) neutral.

Conclusion

This is the perfect opportunity to learn more about the UN in a city that is arguably the world capital of multilateral institutions. If you can't score a slot, still worth checking out from the outside and then enjoy the botanical garden and the Red Cross Museum
