Description
The Gibraltar Botanic Gardens or 'La Alameda Gardens' are spread over 6ha in the centre of Gibraltar. The name "Alameda" comes from 'Alamo', meaning Poplar in Spanish and suggests its original purpose as a tree lined promenade for soldiers and residents when it was created in the 1810's. The plants include a mix of native species and some imported ones. There are also some sculptures, including one of James' Joyce Molly Bloom and a memorial to George Augustus Eliott (who commanded the garrison during the 1779-83 Great Siege of Gibraltar). The Alameda Wildlife Conservation Park is also located there but charges an entrance fee and is not within the scope of this review.
Access & Transport
The gardens are 900m (10mins walk) south of the centre (Cathedral and Tourist office), next to the start of the cable car. There is a car park there. Gibraltar has its own airport and is 20km east of Algeciras, 140km southwest of Malaga and 120km southeast of Cadiz. The public transport connectivity with Spain is poor.
Instructions & Recommendations
Opening hours are 8h00 to sunset. It is easily combined with the Wildlife Conservation Park which occupies its southern side and opens from 10h to 17h. The cable car is also there for those wishing to visit the upper rock nature reserve without breaking a sweat.
Environmental & Social
A green activity that also improves the neighbourhood's living environment
