Le Cap Ferret
1 / 4
Cap Ferret, pointe - by Olivier Martinet on Google
Description
Le Cap Ferret is a sandy headland along the Atlantic Côte d’Argent that separates Arcachon Bay from the Atlantic Ocean. The upmarket resort town is famous for its beaches, lighthouse, small tourist train and - like the rest of the Arcachon area - for its oysters. From the southern end of the spit, one can look east directly at the Dune du Pyla.
Access & Transport
From Bordeaux, take the D106 to its end and you've reached. The drive takes about 1h20mins (longer on weekends). From Arcachon you can drive around the entire bay or take a boat shuttle - depending on sea conditions.
Instructions & Recommendations
We would recommend visiting outside of the peak summer seasons and long weekends (with public holidays) and overnighting will allow you to enjoy the area in the evening and early the next morning.
Environmental & Social
Most activities there will have little carbon footprint. Some economic benefits to the local community but increased commercialization and tourism also have their downside on the social fabric.
Conclusion
Le Cap Ferret has it all: surrounded by the Ocean and the Bay of Arcachon, some well preserved and scenic beaches, and an attractive laid back village lifestyle. If you can visit off season or if your budget is sufficient, then we would strongly recommend you discover the area.
