Chateau Pichon Baron, visit & wine tasting

D2, Pauillac, Nouvelle-Aquitaine

Description

Château Pichon Longueville Baron, commonly referred as Pichon Baron, is a wine estate in the Pauillac appellation of Haut-Médoc, about 70km north of Bordeaux, on the left bank of the Gironde Estuary. Their wine is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot with a little Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot; it is classified as a Second Growth (Deuxième Cru) in the original Bordeaux Wine Official Classification of 1855. The estate is open for visits with prior appointment, it consists of a tour of the winemaking facilites by one of the team's technicians followed by the tasting of three wines.

Access & Transport

The property is located 3km south from the centre of Pauillac (and the train station), close to Saint Julien Beychevelle, along the Route des Chateaux. The easiest way to visit the area is by car, driving northward from Bordeaux along the D2 or the D1215. The regional trains (TER) leaving from Gare St Jean in Bordeaux and headed towards Lesparre stop in Pauillac (60' ride).

Instructions & Recommendations

Make sure you make a prior appointment and note that no minor (<18yrs) will be allowed to taste the wine. The price is no longer disclosed on the website so the amount shown in the practical info section is the last available (from 2023). We suggest combining this activity with a visit of the Haut-Médoc area and its vineyards.

Meta review

We could only find positive reviews and the wine quality is widely acknowledged so it looks like this is a pretty safe bet. Most visitors were particularly complimentary about the knowledge of the guides, the English proficiency of the front desk and the maintenance of the estate.

Environmental & Social

Environmentally neutral. Socially the cultural aspect (discovery of the terroir and wine making culture of Bordeaux region) evens out the alcohol element.

Conclusion

The visit of the Chateau Pichon Baron with wine tasting is highly recommended to anybody keen to explore this part of the Bordeaux wine region. There are other estates worth visiting of course but this one gathers a lot of positive reviews. If the wine itself is of little interest to you then you should look for cheaper tours or just drive around the various Haut-Medoc villages.

Key positive

Professional set up and guides can speak English

An estate renowned for its wine quality

Key negative

None

Suitability

Families are welcome but only adults will be able to taste wine. It is unclear if the tour is accessible to visitors with reduced mobility so best to check with the property but we would think most of the route should be, and the tasting as well.
