Pomerol village, Gironde

1 Route de Lussac, Pomerol, Nouvelle-Aquitaine

Description

Pomerol is a small village in the Gironde department in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, between Libourne and Saint-Émilion and 35km to the northeast of Bordeaux. Its wine producing area is small (about 7km2) but it has a high density of famous estates including Chateau Petrus, Vieux Château Certan and Le Pin. Unlike other Bordeaux regions though, Pomerol has no official wine ranking or classification. The predominant grape variety here is Merlot, as in the neighbouring appellation of Saint-Émilion, which is sometimes blended with some Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. The landscape is made of a tiny village centre around the local church and undulating well-tended vineyards sprinkled with Chateaux that often look like countryside manors with long cellars attached to it.

Access & Transport

There are regular TER trains from Gare Saint Jean in Bordeaux that stop in Libourne (headed towards Perigueux or Bergerac) - the ride is about 25mins. From there it is another 4km to Pomerol. The easiest and fastest way to get there from Bordeaux is to drive on the N89 towards Libourne, Pomerol is located just "behind", to the northeast. From Saint-Émilion, take the D243 for 2km followed by the D245 (right at the fork).

Instructions & Recommendations

Given the proximity to Saint-Émilion, we would recommend visiting both on the same day. If you are keen on some vineyards visit you would need to make an appointment beforehand but many properties in Pomerol are not open to tourists (unless you have some connections in the wine merchant industry).

Meta review

N/A for the village

Environmental & Social

The only carbon footprint is that of your car if you drive there. Any amount spent in the village (F&B, accommodation, wine purchase) helps the local rural economy.

Conclusion

Pomerol is one of the best-known Bordeaux wine Appellations and many visitors will be surprised to find that the village is almost inexistent, mostly consisting of scattered estates. But the countryside is charming and perfect for a bike ride - avoid winter if possible though, as the vineyards look barren.
