The winemaker apprentices @ Chateau Cormeil Figeac

3 Cormeil, Saint-Émilion, Nouvelle-Aquitaine

Description

Chateau Cormeil Figeac in Saint Emilion organizes several activities, including a wine harvest and making workshop for kids aged 3 to 15. It takes place on Sundays at 11h00 and lasts about 75mins. Children will harvest grapes, leaves, pebbles and flowers according to the season, label and encapsulate bottles and learn how to taste grape juice like pros. In the meanwhile, parents are entitled to try 3 wines from the property.

Access & Transport

By car from Bordeaux, take the N89 to Libourne but avoid the town by taking the D1089 "ring road" and then the D243 for a while before taking a right turn on "La Marelle" and then "Cormeil" streets. There are regular TER trains from Gare Saint Jean that stop in Libourne (headed towards Perigueux or Bergerac) and Saint Emilion. The ride is about 25-30mins and the Chateau Cormeil Figeac is located in between, 5km away from each. From there, it is another 4km to Pomerol.

Instructions & Recommendations

Check the website for the opening days and bring closed shoes, hats or boots depending on the weather. We suggest combining this activity with a visit of Saint Emilion or the village of Pomerol.

Meta review

We could only find positive reviews from parents who recommend the workshop as being both fun and educational with an engaging guide.

Environmental & Social

Environmentally neutral (no carbon footprint). Positive from a social perspective as tourism in this area helps small operators and the rural economy in general.

Conclusion

The winemaker apprentices organised by the Château Cormeil-Figeac team is in our view very clever. They take an existing set up that is normally only used for adults and make it engaging for the younger members of the family - that way parents don't feel so guilty taking their kids into wine estates and the children have fun learning about harvest, grape juice / wine making and other operations. Going forward, all members of the family will be looking forward to vineyard visits + kids get some time in a natural environment.

Key positive

Great activities for kids

Key negative

Only once a week except in summer

Suitability

For children between 3 and 15. Parents can keep themselves busy tasting wine from the property. It is unclear if the workshop is accessible to children with reduced mobility, but we think it should be with the help of an accompanying adult.
