Albayzín & Sacromonte, Granada (guided tour)

Plaza Nueva, Granada, Andalucía

Description

Albaicín was a center of Muslim culture and one of the oldest parts of Granada; it also contained the Jewish Quarter. It includes points of interests such as the city walls with their various towers and gates (e.g. Puerta Nueva) and several churches. The Sacromonte neighbourhood, just to the east of Albaicín and to the north of the Alhambra fortress, was known as the gypsy quarter. It has houses built into the rocks lining up Camino del Sacromonte and is also known for its Flamenco dance heritage. The tour reviewed here is operated by Lolita's Tours and led by a guide in Spanish or English language and lasts 2hours. It takes place around sunset time.

Access & Transport

Meeting point is at the fountain on Plaza Nueva. Look for the pink umbrella. The Plaza borders Reyes Catolicos, about 100m to the East of the Cathedral. There are bus stops along C. Gran Vía de Colón, 1min walk away.

Instructions & Recommendations

No refund if cancelled less than 24h before the tour's scheduled start. Light rain is not cause for cancellation so bring an umbrella in case of rainy weather + wear comfortable walking shoes.

Meta review

Both neighbourhoods are popular with tourists and this walking tour is one of the best rated online. Customers are complimentary about the passionate and knowledgeable guides and regularly state that it gave a different dimension their visit. Other regular comments relate to the good organization, the several viewpoints to take pictures + a few mentions of the guide not always being easy to understand and there being too many people in the group (but that does not seem to be a regular occurrence).

Environmental & Social

No environmental impact Socially slightly positive as it helps independent operators and enables visitors to discover the city with the insights of a local

Conclusion

Guided neighbourhood tours are one of the best ways to discover new places, more interactive and in depth than reading a travel guide, but they are not always great value. This one is fairly priced and therefore worth looking into

Plenty of photo opportunities

Cultural and historical insights

Affordable

Key negative

Need to follow a pre-set route and timing
