Sierra Nevada hike - Ruta de Los Cahorros

14 GR-3202, Monachil, Andalucía

Description

Los Cahorros is the name of a gorge of the Monachil river, in the Sierra Nevada mountain range near Granada. The 7.2km loop trail reviewed here starts in the town of Monachil and has a cumulative ascent (and descent) of 360m on a single-track trail that is not too technical, making it appropriate for beginners / families with a standard level of fitness and no prior trekking experience. Access & Transport

The trail head is next to the village, just across the river. There is a public parking. Monachil is 12km southeast of Granada on the GR-3202 and bus 183 connects to the city.

Instructions & Recommendations

Make sure to bring proper footwear, some snacks, water and sun protection

Meta review

This hike is one of the most popular around Granada and is well rated; online comments recommend going on a weekday if possible (less busy) and go anti-clockwise so that you are not going against the flow, especially at some of the natural bottlenecks. The first part seems to be the most interesting one and hikers highlight the excellent views and change of scenery.

Environmental & Social

Eco-friendly activity. Socially marginally positive as it brings some revenues to the village (F&B)

The Ruta de Los Cahorros trail is beginner-friendly but enjoyable by all. One of the best options in the Sierra Nevada within easy distance from Granada to make it a half day outing.
