Alhambra & Generalife

s/n Calle Real de la Alhambra, Granada, Andalucía

Description

The Alhambra is one Spain's most famous palace and fortress complex and monuments of Islamic architecture. It is built on the Sabika hill, an outcrop of the Sierra Nevada, on the edge of the city of Granada. Construction started in 1238, under the first Nasrid emir. The main buildings within the complex are the Alcazaba, Nasrid Palaces, Generalife and can be accessed with the General ticket. The visit to the Palace of Charles V, commissioned in 1526, and the Alhambra Museum is free. The Moorish architecture stands out for its use of courtyards with water features and the stonework (carved stucco) and mosaics. Geometric patterns, vegetal motifs, Arabic inscriptions and 'muqarnas' are the main styles of decoration.

Access & Transport

Address: Paseo del Generalife, Granada It is possible to walk there from the city centre in 30mins (2km) or take a bus: C30 from Plaza Isabel la Catolica or C32 from Albaicín. For those intending to drive, there is a carpark but private transport is not allowed to access Alhambra from the city center so you would need to use the ring road toward Motril (south) and follow the signs. There is an established itinerary for wheelchairs. More info here: https://www.alhambra-patronato.es/en/visit/faq

Meta review

If you have ever done any research about Andalusia in a travel guide or magazine you would have set your eyes on the Alhambra complex. This is the most famous and visited attraction in southern Spain. Online reviews do not contradict this and highlight the gorgeous gardens, breath-taking views and the exquisite workmanship. Those who used a guide think it really added something to the visit. Tip: plenty of walking involved so you may want to use a bus on the way to the monument and walk back down to the city.

Environmental & Social

We could not find any environmental or social related information. We deem this activity marginally negative from an environmental perspective (lighting). Socially it contributes towards the upkeep of the complex and preserves the country's cultural, architectural and artistic heritage.

Conclusion

Unless you are trying to make a point by not visiting, the Alhambra complex definitely qualify for the "must see" category and is worth a drive if need be. Impressive to look out from outside and spectacular from the inside - in an elegant rather than 'in your face' way. Worth upgrading to a guide tour, we think.
