Royal Chapel of Granada - by Management
Description
The Royal Chapel of Granada was built in the early 16th century as the burial place for Queen Isabella I and King Ferdinand, the "Catholic Monarchs" whose marriage and joint rule marked the unification of Spain. It was designed in Isabelline Gothic style and follows the same model as the Monastery of San Juan de los Reyes in Toledo. The Royal Chapel contains the graves of Isabel and Ferdinand, Joanna of Castile "the Mad" (Queen of Castile and Aragon, and her husband), and Philip I of Castile "the Handsome", King (through his wife) of Castile. In the crypt, there is also the sarcophagus of the infante Miguel da Paz, Prince of Portugal, grandson of the Catholic Monarchs, who died as a child.
Access & Transport
Address: Calle Oficios The monument is next to the Cathedral, at the center of the old town. There are bus stops next to it along Gran Vía de Colón with 'Plaza del Carmen - Ayuntamiento' along Reyes Catolicos another option.
Instructions & Recommendations
Visitors should dress conservatively. There is a free audio guide that can be downloaded on mobile phones. We suggest combining this with a visit of the Granada Cathedral next to it
Environmental & Social
Environmentally neutral. The entrance fee helps preserve this historic building, part of the city's cultural and historical heritages.
Conclusion
Excellent opportunity to learn more about the Castilian-Aragonese Catholic Monarchs and the period around the "Reconquista" of Granada + some religious art as a bonus, but at current entry price this isn't very good value.
